        |  | 
      
        |  | WHEREAS, Sergeant Adam Johnson of the Austin Police | 
      
        |  | Department demonstrated great courage and composure on November 28, | 
      
        |  | 2014, when he stopped a shooting rampage taking place in the streets | 
      
        |  | of Austin; and | 
      
        |  | WHEREAS, At 2:22 a.m. on that Friday morning, an armed man | 
      
        |  | began an assault against three government buildings in downtown | 
      
        |  | Austin; carrying two long rifles, he initially fired at the guard | 
      
        |  | shack of the U.S. Federal Court Building, and he then tried to blow | 
      
        |  | up the Mexican Consulate with an improvised bomb, which caused a | 
      
        |  | fire but failed to destroy the building; next, the suspect attacked | 
      
        |  | the headquarters building of the Austin Police Department, firing | 
      
        |  | at windows and causing the officers and civilian employees inside | 
      
        |  | to take cover; and | 
      
        |  | WHEREAS, At the moment the suspect began attacking APD | 
      
        |  | headquarters, Sergeant Johnson, a member of the department's | 
      
        |  | mounted patrol, was putting two horses into a trailer in the parking | 
      
        |  | garage across the street; holding the reins of the horses with one | 
      
        |  | hand, he drew his sidearm with the other; while under fire from the | 
      
        |  | suspect, the sergeant fired a single shot that hit the man from a | 
      
        |  | distance of 104 yards, ending the violence; apart from the suspect, | 
      
        |  | there were no other casualties; and | 
      
        |  | WHEREAS, Over the course of the incident, the suspect fired | 
      
        |  | hundreds of rounds of ammunition, putting at risk not only the | 
      
        |  | officers and staff of the Austin police headquarters, but also | 
      
        |  | countless civilians in downtown Austin at that time, and Sergeant | 
      
        |  | Johnson's quick, decisive, and heroic action helped to avert what | 
      
        |  | could have been a terrible tragedy; now, therefore, be it | 
      
        |  | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | 
      
        |  | Legislature hereby commend Sergeant Adam Johnson for his bravery | 
      
        |  | and dispatch in safeguarding citizens of Austin on November 28, | 
      
        |  | 2014, and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success | 
      
        |  | with his important work; and, be it further | 
      
        |  | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | 
      
        |  | prepared for Sergeant Johnson as an expression of high regard by the | 
      
        |  | Texas House of Representatives. |
