1 An Act relating to peace officers, reserve peace officers, and
2 federal officers going armed with, carrying, or transporting
3 a firearm on school grounds.

1 1 Section 1. Section 724.2A, Code 2018, is amended to read as
1 2 follows:
1 3 724.2A Peace officer == defined == reserved peace officer
1 4 included.
1 5 As used in sections 724.4, 724.4B, 724.6, and 724.11, "peace
1 6 officer" includes a reserve peace officer as defined in section
1 7 80D.1A.
1 8 Sec. 2. Section 724.4B, subsection 2, paragraph a, Code
1 9 2018, is amended to read as follows:
1 10 a. A person listed under section 724.4, subsection 4,
1 11 paragraphs "b" "c" through "f" or "j".
1 12 Sec. 3. Section 724.4B, subsection 2, Code 2018, is amended
1 13 by adding the following new paragraph:
1 14 NEW PARAGRAPH. d. A peace officer including a peace officer
1 15 who has not been certified and a federal officer when the
1 16 officer's employment requires going armed, whether or not the
1 17 peace officer or federal officer is acting in the performance
1 18 of official duties.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
1 21 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly.
1 22 This bill relates to peace officers, reserve peace
1 23 officers, and federal officers going armed with, carrying, or
1 24 transporting a firearm on school grounds.
1 25 The bill specifies that a peace officer or reserve peace
1 26 officer including a peace officer or reserve peace officer
1 27 who has not been certified, and a federal officer when the
1 28 officer's employment requires going armed, may go armed with,
1 29 carry, or transport a firearm on school grounds, whether or not
1 30 the officer is acting in the performance of official duties.
1 31 A person who goes armed with, carries, or transports a
1 32 firearm on the grounds of a school in violation of Code section
1 33 724.4B commits a class "D" felony. A class "D" felony is
1 34 punishable by confinement for no more than five years and a
1 35 fine of at least $750 but not more than $7,500.
